Dear Ms. Bateman,
Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!
We searched the National Archives Catalog but were unable to locate William Hunt in the Population Schedules for the 1850 Census, Population Schedules for the 1860 Census, Population Schedules for the 1870 Census, and the Population Schedules for the 1880 Census as digital images have not been added to the Catalog yet.
Thus, we searched the Federal Census records on Ancestry and located William Hunt in the 1850 Census and 1860 Census as a landowner in Currituck County, North Carolina; he is listed as Mulatto. William would have to be a freedman to own property.
To view these records on Ancestry, there may be a fee. Or you may view these records online at one NARA's facilities for free via ALIC. For the nearest NARA location, please consult our web page at https://www.archives.gov/locations/. Also, some of the images from Ancestry are available for free on Family Search at https://www.familysearch.org/en/.
We hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
