Looking for date of 3rd great-grandfather William Hulbert's naturalization some time between 1870 and 1880. He immigrated after 1870 and was living in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1880.

He was naturalized in Salt Lake City on 7 Sep 1880.  Utah, U.S., Naturalization and Citizenship Records, 1858-1959 - Ancestry.com

I believe this is the arrival of William & Jane Hulbert and 6 of their children in Quebec Canada on 9 Jul 1868 on the SS Hibernian.  Canada, Incoming Passenger Lists, 1865-1935 - Ancestry.com

There is a chance that the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has naturalization records pertaining to William Hulbert, but it is not guaranteed. NARA would only have the records if he gained his naturalization through a Federal court. But prior to September 27, 1906, any "court of record" (municipal, county, state, or Federal) could grant United States citizenship. Often petitioners went to the court most geographically convenient for them. As a general rule, the National Archives does not have naturalization records created in state or local courts.

Since William Hulbert lived in Utah (which would most likely be where he gained his naturalization), you should check with the reference office at the National Archives at Denver--which is where Federal court and naturalization records from Utah are held. You can contact that office at:

Thanks very much Susannah, and for the naturalization certificate. Both are very helpful. The UK census of 1871 has William still living in West Ham, just outside London, but Jane and some of the children are not mentioned. I wonder if they went in 1868, some settled and William returned and then rejoined the migrants at a later date.
