  • Did the ship Scotland arrive in the Port of New York on Jan 9 1943 or Jan 9 1842? If 1943 the Scotland and the Eutaw arrived 2 days appart and left Liverpool at about the same time. William Nash might not have been able to book everybody on the same boat and found booking for 6 persons on the Eutaw and 3 on the Scotland. So he listed Harriett and William age 10, the oldest, with the twins Samuel and Hepsibah age 8, and the two toddlers on the Eutaw, but also held spots on the Scotland for himself, his elder daughter Elizabeth Ann, and William 10 years old as well. William (Taylor not given in the manifest) wanted to go with dad and his big sister on the Scotland rather than stay in the crowded cabin of the Eutaw with the noisy and smelly younger siblings, but dad would not strike him off the Scotland manifest so that the space left empty could not be occupied by someone else, and it would leave more room for Harriett and children. If the Scotland arrived in New York in January 1842, the story is different and it seems hard to think that a 10-year old would be sent back to fetch the family; another point is that the age would not have been 10 years both times when there is a year difference. Thanks for the search!
