William Nash born in 1801 left Liverpool, England and arrived in Jan 11, 1842, at the Port of New York on the ship - Scotland-
Directly below him on the manifest is Elizabeth Nash age: 15 and William Nash age:10. They are on the first page of 3-page manifest and are listed as Numbers 13,14,15.
Thank you for your research!
Harriet Nash, age 33 [wife of William Nash who did not accompany her], arrived in New York in 1843 on the Eutaw with William Nash age 10, Samuel and Hepsibah Nash [twins] age 8, Harriett age 3, Mary Ann age 1 1/2. Your research for William also seems correct because William Nash's first born Elisabeth 15 is there but how can both be correct with William Nash age 10 on both lists?
"New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1891", , FamilySearch (www.familysearch.org/.../1:1:QVRQ-SHBV : Sat Mar 09 01:24:23 UTC 2024), Entry for Harriett Nash, 1843.
The ship Eutaw arrived in the Port of New York on Jan 9, 1843, and the ship Scotland arrived on Jan 11, 1843. I believe the ships manifest would be complied at the original port and perhaps a change was made at the last minute and that's how William went with his father and sister on the ship Scotland. The standard practice if a person is not aboard the ship is to strike or put a line threw that passenger's name, this was not done on the Eutaw manifest.
Maybe William jr had been sent back to England to get his mum and siblings....
Did the ship Scotland arrive in the Port of New York on Jan 9 1943 or Jan 9 1842? If 1943 the Scotland and the Eutaw arrived 2 days appart and left Liverpool at about the same time. William Nash might not have been able to book everybody on the same boat and found booking for 6 persons on the Eutaw and 3 on the Scotland. So he listed Harriett and William age 10, the oldest, with the twins Samuel and Hepsibah age 8, and the two toddlers on the Eutaw, but also held spots on the Scotland for himself, his elder daughter Elizabeth Ann, and William 10 years old as well. William (Taylor not given in the manifest) wanted to go with dad and his big sister on the Scotland rather than stay in the crowded cabin of the Eutaw with the noisy and smelly younger siblings, but dad would not strike him off the Scotland manifest so that the space left empty could not be occupied by someone else, and it would leave more room for Harriett and children. If the Scotland arrived in New York in January 1842, the story is different and it seems hard to think that a 10-year old would be sent back to fetch the family; another point is that the age would not have been 10 years both times when there is a year difference. Thanks for the search!
Hello! Which is correct? I see here that William Nash born 1801 left Liverpool and arrived in Jan 11, 1842 at the port of New York. In a later message you say that he arrived on January 11, 1843. I believe that 1843 is the correct date. Can you confirm? (My last message had so many typos I am writing you again. I live in France, am 93 years old, and am trying to nail down our family history before nobody is left who remembers our grandparents – my brother has lost his memory and my older sister is dead.) Thanks so much for your messages!
Rechecking the records the ship Scotland arrived in the Port of New York on Jan 11, 1842
No ships arrived in the Port of New York on Jan 11, 1843
Sylvia W posting is correct, William Jr. went back to England that explains his arrival on Jan 9, 1843.
I tried to confirm William Jr. birth on Ancestry
All England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 results for William Nash
I search the years from 1831-1833 the was 15 births for William Nash Father: William Nash but no birth mother by the name Harriet is listed.
I like to add Congratulations for your attention to the facts and your pursuit of them.
Thank you for your research and clarity on the arrival in New York of the Scotland in 1842. Regarding the births of William Nash, Father William Nash his birth mother was not Harriett. She was his father's third wife who must have brought up the children after the deaths of the first two. His first wife was(Ann Cragg, mother of Elisabeth Ann Nash. The second was William's mother, Ann Taylor. When she died he married Harriett (I do not have her last name). All three were born and married in England. This information fortunately was written in a letter from an old aunt in 1960 ; she has some precise dates, but not all, that must have been taken from a family bible.
Can you tell me if among the 15 William Nash there is one whose mother is Ann Taylor, and if so, where in England? Many thanks again for your precious help.
FYI
The maiden name of Harriet (18940) and Mary Ann (1841)’s mother was GILLMAN …
Thank you! Do you also have the date and place of their marriage?
