Bremen emigration of Heinrich & Bernardina Gieske, 1882 or 1883

I know that many Bremen passenger ship lists were destroyed when that city was bombed in WWII.

However, I am still hoping to find a record of the emigration of brother & sister Heinrich & Bernardina Gieske, from Neuenkirchen, Oldenburg.

• According to US Census (1900, 1910, 1930), Heinrich Gieske arrived in 1882.
• According to US Census 1900, Bernardina Gieske Stuntebeck arrived in 1883.

Maybe more likely they came together?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Hello Sylvia,

I had considered passenger #368 on Ship Oder a likely possibility--until I found Henry Gieske's naturalization record from Probate Court of Hamilton County in Cincinnati, 04 Aug 1884.

    See: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-8996-KJG6?i=1216&cc=1987615&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AQPHG-C3P8

This record states that Henry Gieske emigrated out of Amsterdam on 24 May 1882 and arrived in New York in June 1882. The name of the ship is not given.

I found 3 ships that left Amsterdam for New York in May and June 1882:

    • Ship Surrey, arrived in NY on 02 Jun 1882
    • Ship Pollux, arrived in NY on 11Jun 1882
    • Ship Edam, arrived in NY on 19 Jun 1882

However, as far as I can tell, Henry Gieske's name is not on any of these passenger lists. Considering "scribal error," the only corrupted spelling of Gieske I could find was a female passenger on the Surrey: M Lieske, age 20. But I don't think it's likely.

    I'm stumped!

Thanks for your interest and help.

  • Update, 16 January 2024:

Ships from Amsterdam that arrived at New York in May and June of 1882

    https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Free_Online_New_York_Passenger_Lists,_1820-1897

    M237, Roll 452 (NY arrivals 23 May 1882 – 06 Jun 1882)

    • Schiedam, arrived 30 May 1882 (PDF pgs 492-511)
    • Nemesis, arrived 31 May 1882 (PDF pgs 31-56)
    • Surrey, arrived 02 Jun 1882 (PDF pgs 803-825)

    M237, Roll 453 (NY arrivals 07 Jun 1882 – 23 Jun 1882)

    • Pollux, arrived 11 Jun 1882 (PDF pgs 307-320)
    • Edam, arrived 19 Jun 1882 (PDF pgs 8-20)

I read the passenger lists of all 5 ships out of Amsterdam. I did not find Heinrich Gieske in any of them. One possibility, however, is a passenger on the Nemesis with a corrupt version of the Gieske name, found about half way down the last page of the passenger list (pdf p56):

    • K. Gooski, age 25, male, farmer, from Germany

Could K. Gooski be H. Gieske?  Some things align: Both were male German farmers in their 20s who emigrated alone. Also, in 1882, it took about 7 days to cross the Atlantic, which aligns with Heinrich Gieske’s reported departure from Amsterdam on 24 May 1882 and the arrival of the Nemesis in New York on 31 May 1882.

    Thanks for any POV.
