According to this tree Joseph did register for the draft but may not have been involved in the actual combat maybe because of his Class 2 designation.

What is class 2 in the Civil War draft?

The records were divided into three parts, or classes: Class I - men 20-35 subject to military duty and unmarried men 36-44 subject to military duty. Class II - married men 36-44. Class III - volunteers.

According to the Family Tree he died Abt 1865 most likely in Stark, Ohio on a family letter it states he was in the service in 1864.

After his death his wife remarried to a man named Barnhart E. Ehret per the 1900 U.S. Census she is widowed.

She died Dec 2, 1902
