Which railroad company did my great great grandfather work on?

Henry Edward Alden was a fireman on a railroad. He was born in Needham, MA, lived in RI, and raised his family in Chicago. Which rail line would have ended up in Chicago? Ive been searching on line but can't find it?

I have a picture which I think are his RR employee buddies! Love the bushy mustaches. Henry is the big guy on the far left. thanks for your help!

There is no one repository of railroad employee records, and indeed there is no legal requirement for the records of private corporations to be permanently preserved.

We suggest reviewing United States Occupations Finding Railroad Records - International Institute, Where to Find Railroad Worker Records Online, Records: Administrative, Employment and Pensions, Finding Your Railroad Ancestors, and similar articles for an overview of what resources do exist. However be aware that most historical corporate records of railroad employees have not survived to the present day.

We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the Pension Claim Files, 1934 - 2001 in the Records of the Railroad Retirement Board (Record Group 184). The RRB Inactive Claims Folders are limited to individuals who worked in the rail industry after 1936. These records are in the custody of the National Archives at Atlanta. Their Railroad Retirement Board Records Web Page provides information on the records and filing a request, as well as sample files. For more information about these non-digitized records, please contact them at atlanta.archives@nara.gov
