How to find the records for Sarah Drew, born Ireland 1820, died 1873 (but possibly not in New York) and her New York relatives. Monument to her in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn NY, marked “our aunt”. Next to tomb of NASH, Elizabeth, 1872-1936, born Switzer daughter of James Switzer (1840 Ireland-1925 New York) and Eliza Wray (lacking data).  James was the son of Jacob Switzer and Margaret Drew (lacking dates for both, but both born in Ireland died in NYC).

Parents

  • The 1870 Census (2 versions) contains Sarah Drew with various Switzer siblings:
    9 Jan 1870: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-68X7-GM9?i=1923 (#18)
    2 Jul 1870 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-DCZZ-C8?i=193 (#26)

These Switzer siblings seem to have parents called Henry Switzer and Mary Drew and they originated from cty Limerick.
I’ve seen James added as another sibling to this family in various online trees, but I suppose that he could actually have had some other relationship with them (cousins?)

When Sarah dies on 12 May 1873 in Manhattan, she’s 54 years, single and has been in the US for 7 years, so there won't be much else for her time in New York.

  • Maybe your James was part of that family after all:

(Parish registers of Rathkeale, Limerick County : christenings, 1742-1899, marriages, 1744-1845 and burials, 1742-1901)

  • This James looks like he may be a cousin to the James whose arrival in the US I am looking for. I don't see any more information about this James son of Henry.  He may not have survived like so many others.

Is it possible to ask about information of more than one person at a time? I am looking for arrivals in the US by Switzer family members who I believe may have come together at the same time. In the 1870 census we have Switzer siblings ages (often not confimed from one copy of the census to the other) : Margaret 28, Sarah 24, Maria 23, Charlotte 19, George 25. They are probably children of Henry Swtizer and Margaret Drew. Considering that they are adults in their 20’s, I could believe that they came with their parents around 1850. This is also the estimated date for the arrival for James Switzer, parents Jacob Switzer and Mary Drew (parents confirmed by records) and estimate of arrival by James (1840-1925) who said he spent his first 10 years in Ireland.

I would like to find the arrival dates in the US of all of the above, if possible – believing that they came to America together.
