Great Great Grandfather's information

Looking for any information on my great-great grandfather. His name was Frederic Wilhelm Oertel and he would have arrived here in approximately 1861. He was born in Germany in 1836. He would have been the appropriate age for fighting so I'm curious if there are any military records for him. I can't find any immigration records for him so the arrival date is just a guess based off his death certificate. I've been searching for over 20 years for any information so anything is helpful and thanks in advance.

    We checked the Records of the Adjutant General's Office (Record Group 94), including the general indexes to Compiled Military Service Records (CMSRs) and National Archives Microfilm Publication M233, Register of Enlistments in the U.S. Army, 1798-1914, but the results have been inconclusive. We could find no soldier by the specific name of Frederick William Oertel, but there is one that goes by the name of William Oertel who served from Missouri. The only Frederick Oertel we could find had the middle name Augustus and served in a New York regiment as well as the Veteran Reserve Corps. It seems doubtful that your relative served but we would need to know more information to make any kind a definitive assertion.
