Are there writing prompts (or other open ended questions) that are useful when trying to write down personal histories of individuals? (E.g., I remember when Hurricane Agnes arrived because ....)

Are there any useful questions that will prompt the memories of individuals when trying to memorialize their lives?  For example, I could ask the individual in question about Hurricane Agnes (1972) and her memories of what the flooding was like in Mt. Rainier.  However, I would like more general questions that might be of general use in moving memories from fragile brain to less fragile electrons or other repositories.
