Seeking sources on migration from New England to New Jersey during 17th and 18th century

Research suggests many early residents of New Jersey did not immigrate directly from Europe but migrated from New England, particularly Massachusetts, and that the early residents tended to be British or Dutch from New Amsterdam (New York), not Irish at that early time. Not having found sources are there books, other sources or treatises that address and discuss the migration or perhaps combined with immigration?

  • Dear Mr. Soden,

I just signed up for NARA, but after reading the reply below, I think I will be in the same position you are--Colonial America info.

I recently did a "deep dive" into Ancestry.com's immigration material.  I did find mention of early 18th century (1730s, to be more precise) of English and Dutch leaving Kings County, (a/k/a Brooklyn) and New York City for the "wilds" of New Jersey.  This material seems very difficult to come by.  Also, Ancestry does not make it easy, either.  For example, if you are looking at a general category of "immigration," you have to go through EACH source with your ancestor's name and information.

New Jersey is tough to find colonial info, but perhaps the following website will provide some guidance:

    Good luck!
