I the census taken in 1895 census and race

In the census that was done in 1895 there is a spot that said my grandfather's race was colored and a space that said his nationality was native. Are they referring to being native american as well or that he was born in America. We are supposed to be both native american and black but I am having a hard time finding out who was the native american and what tribe we belong to.

Is this a state census... such as New Jersey? The federal population censuses are taken on the '0'.... that is, 1870, 1880, 1890, 1900. Have you tried to find the instructions to enumerators that might clear up what is expected as an answer to a question?

I know my family is from New Jersey. I don't know what type of census it was. I do have that it was done in Fair Haven and the house hold #1362. I thought all census was the same. What other institutions should I look up?

No, there are state censuses and federal censuses. You are asking your question on a federal sponsored website. Now that I know it's the New Jersey 1895 census, then a search online shows me: https://www.mclib.info/Research/Local-History-Genealogy/Census-Records and the question asked is native or foreign born. Native has nothing to do with Indian background. All it meant was born in the U.S.
