What is the history of census workers or enumerators? Is there information available on how they were hired and trained over the years? Thank you!

Before 1880 the census was taken by Assistant Marshals. Who took the census is one of my interests, and I usually covered how they were selected and trained in my many YouTube census videos for specific years. I show many original documents in the process. See https://www.youtube.com/cc/JDWTalks. and an overview at https://youtu.be/d1z5h70PhvA : In addition the Census Bureau usually has produced a report starting with "Procedural History of the xxx Census" that has a detailed history of the logistics of setting up the census and the census takers.
