early census records

For the early census takers were there maps or keys that could be used to show where a dwelling, referenced with a number, was located?

    What do you mean by "early"?  Until the 1880 census, street addresses (at least in cities) were not part of the census form.  For 1870, New York and Philadelphia had a second recount and street addresses were added for those U.S. censuses.  Given that early censuses, like 1870 and earlier had months to complete the census, and assistant marshals did the count, it is unlikely you are going to find maps with dwelling locations.  Those early censuses used usually political boundaries to determine the responsibility of census takers.
