If you are looking for a particular person on a Census Record, you need only the name and the state where the person lived to get started. The US Census has been taken every ten years since 1790, and the 1950 Census is the most recent available one. You can find more about the Census on this page linked here.
To start researching in the Census, you can use the web page Search Census Records Online and Other Resources, which provides information about accessing these records online. There may be a fee for using Ancestry. Please check for access at your local library as many library systems subscribe to these sites, making them free for their patrons. FamilySearch can be accessed with a free account.
Hopefully other community members may have additional suggestions.
We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
