‘MA’ on census in color section

Hi,

I have an instance where, in the ‘color’ column on the 1880 NY census, it is written ‘MA, or could be an error or an indication of something other than Mulatto?

Thanks

“MA” is not one of the abbreviations used by the census enumerators in that column. It could be an error, or the census taker could have used the wrong column to note something else. It’s also possible that it is actually “Mu” and just looks like “MA.” If you can let us know the exact page(s) where you’re seeing this, we can give you a better answer. You can either respond here or contact us directly at archives1reference@nara.gov.

We hope this assists you with your research!
