Seeking copies of non-population census

Hello, Can anyone tell me how I order non-population census pages from NARA?  I have looked for close to an hour and the website keeps sending me in circles.  Thanks

  • Jim, what census year are you looking for, and which specific non-population schedule pages?  Are you looking for a blank form image, or a specific actual filled in record?  If you are looking for specific records for the 1950 census's housing or agricultural schedules, they were never filmed and the originals destroyed. All that remains are summary statistics in Census Bureau reports.

  • Dear Mr. Thornhill,

Thank you for posting your request on History Hub!

We searched the National Archives Catalog and located 31 series in the Records of the Bureau of the Census (Record Group 29) that include various non-population census schedules from 1850 to 2007. For more information about these non-digitized records, please contact the National Archives in Washington, DC - Textual Reference (RDT1) at archives1reference@nara.gov.

You may experience a delay in receiving an initial acknowledgment as well as a substantive response to your reference request from RDT1. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and patience as we balance mission-critical work and the safety of our staff during the pandemic.  Please check NARA’s web page about COVID-19 updates for the latest information.

We suggest reviewing the NARA web pages about nonpopulation census records that includes a listing by state for the 1820 through 1930 census. Also, please refer to the U.S. Census Bureau website about Business and Economy.

If the non-population census schedules in which you are interested are not available from NARA, then you should contact the state archives or equivalent agency.

We hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your research!
