us treasury photography department

I am looking for NARA records employment relating to the U S Treasury from 1857-1863 and records relating to the photography department there.  Does anyone know what specific record group and sub group those records might be filed under?

Thank you for your help!

Thank you for posting your question on History Hub!

In regards to your inquiry, searching for the photography unit within the Department of the Treasury for the period of 1857-1863, we find one series of records that may be responsive.

There are hundreds of entries for clerks and many various units listed in these 12 very large volumes, and I spent an hour going through them without locating entries for the photography unit for that date period. However, it is possible with more time spent that a listing could be found among the clerks.

You are welcome to come in and spend a day going over the volumes. Be aware these are very large volumes and are quite old, requiring special handling. You also may want to hire a professional researcher. A list of professional researchers available in our facility in College Park, Maryland, can be found at this link: https://www.archives.gov/research/hire-help/locations.html?facility=college-park

The citation for these volumes is as follows:

    RG 56 A1 218 Biographies of Treasury Employees, 1835–1912.
    Volumes 1-5, located at: 450/58/24/04
Oversized Volumes 6-12, located at: 450/901/11/02.

This series consists of a register of the names of Treasury employees in the District of Columbia; their positions, grades, ages, and dates of employment; the State and congressional districts from which they were appointed; contemporary legal addresses; relatives in office; military service; the persons who recommended them; and the dates and circumstances under which the employee left the job. Only one volume contains an index. Arranged in a rough chronological order, thereunder by administrative unit.

You may want to contact the Still Pictures unit of the National Archives in College Park, Maryland for photographs taken by this unit during this date period. It is possible they may have some textual documentation for the photographic unit at that time. Email: stillpix@nara.gov

Please note that although the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) holds employee records for federal employees, for the Department of the Treasury, the records they hold date from 1883 and onward.

We invite you to continue the conversation with community members on History Hub, but should you have follow up questions for the staff at Archives II, please email us at archives2reference@nara.gov so that we can assist you further.

We hope this assists you with your research!
