Pvt. Green fought in the battle that took place in the vicinity of Schumann crossroads in late December 1944. As he told us wide eyed kids back in the 1960s he was a BAR man. He told us he and a Sargent (unknown name ) moved foward from fox hole to fox hole, encountering one german he engaged with his BAR then behind them more germans begain firing to their rear in the opposite direction. They went to far and were behind enemy lines at that point. Then surrounded he got the "HANDS UP" order and was captured along with the Sargent. This is one of several stories we were told over and over. He drank alot so the stories were sensational. He also said he was captured by what he thought were SS troops. I have read Captain Creightentions after action report (1949 50) on the F Co, 2 Bn role in the battle. It mentions a BAR man named Pvt Green in action with 1st platoon on December 30th. But it is unclear if this is our guy given the date.
Green is listed in the NARA POW Data Base (punch cards) as last report date December 31st. Its not clear what that date means. Doing some cross reference work i noted Kurt Vonnegut is listed in the same NARA Data base last report date Dec. 21. He was captured on 19th of December two days later. If Greens last report date is 31 Dec he may have been captured on the 29th using that assumption. But its suspicious in that the report date can fluctuate from soldier to soldier.
