Please help with the Roosevelt Papers, there are so many and I wish to finish them
Hi Evan- I have been working in Teddy Roosevelt since March. I started with "in progress" and once that was close to done (before the latest document dump) I went back to reviewing. I am now in
2. Mar. 7-Sept. 15 1901:
Vice Presidency and McKinley's Assassination April 20- May 8
I am going in order and when I finish all documents in this folder I may go back to "in progress" in the new section. TR will take years to complete so don't get discouraged. There are others working here but with the volume of papers we are in for a long haul.
BTW, if you ever want me to review a page or if you have a question about a document feel free to paste it here. I would be glad to look it over.
Take care,
Henry
I have been painstakingly working through the 1908-1910 TR Letters. I have almost completed the entirety of one section -- entering over 500 files "for review" the past few weeks. It certainly would be helpful to buddy up to get these approved (where appropriate) or re-edited. If you have time to do a few a week (slowly as you have time) it would really help. I can do the same for you too of course - just let me know the section!
The section I have mostly completed is:
Theodore Roosevelt Papers: Series 1: Letters and Related Material, 1759-1919; 1908, Dec. 20-1909, Jan. 25
https://crowd.loc.gov/campaigns/rough-rider-bull-moose-theodore-roosevelt/safari/mss382990087/?
I had to re-open a number of completed documents while doing this, as there were many errors in transcription of names, places, etc. It constantly amazes me that people will just make things up when they can't quite read text, but they do...
Thanks for the feedback, Bill. I may have hit Google just right because I think I saw the same link to the NY Times article. And thanks for confirming the entry.
I have a PC and not a Mac. I have collected a large number of letterheads but I have been working my way up from the beginning of TR to the end of 1902 and I'm not sure where you are working. If you have a question as to whether I have particular letterhead let me know. Not to speak for Diane but she may have also been collecting letterheads.

William SILVERMAN and Diane Estes we've heard from many volunteers who use common or free software for OCR (Optical Character Recognition aka automatic text generation for typed materials). You may find these posts with instructions for two different strategies useful!
Lauren - Thank you. That's VERY helpful.

Double Wow!
I was not aware of the Google Docs fix. I have tried it on a photo containing text, and it worked. The screen shot process you describe proves your diligence! I will try it in desperate situations.
Re: the Mac OS Monterey OCR - It is described at 21:30 in this long video that goes through all the changes in the new OS https://9to5mac.com/2021/10/25/should-i-upgrade-to-macos-monterey/http://

Henry - I've been going back and forth on edits with someone (might be you?) for documents 623, 624 and 626 in review stage. The name referred to here is definitely "Owen"(Wister), not "Dan" - Context: Owen has been seriously ill and his wife Mary is writing on his behalf, except for his brief note on #626. The name looks quite a bit like "Dan", but it is not.
This is the first time I've re-edited the same document twice, and it feels a bit odd - I don't want to get into a push-pull with other reviewers, and normally accept others' edits - but for this I am positive that "Owen" is correct.
It was me. I thought his nickname was Dan and I thought that's what it looked like. It did not look like Owen to me. If you disagree, change it. It is your work and if you feel you are correct, that's fine. I am away this weekend and do not have my computer, so I won't be able to fix anything until Monday.
Henry
Henry - you are right! That was indeed his nickname. Apologies for the "edit tug-of-war" and I've changed it back to Dan now for you to final approve. Odd to use letterhead that says Owen and go by Dan, but stranger things have happened...
Not a problem. That's what collaboration is for, to hash out ideas. I'm certainly not always right and am glad to be corrected. I'll check those pages when I have access to my computer.
Henry
I accepted those three pages so I wouldn't forget when I get back to reviewing the section. I'm at page 658 so I will probably finish no later than Tuesday but I'll post here when I am finished.
Henry
Diane- I finished reviewing the section. Let me know if you edit any and need me to review them again.

Henry Rosenberg. I have finished another whole section of Roosevelt (#86 this time) -- reviewing all documents and ensuring they are OK. At your leisure, it would be fantastic if you could help again by reviewing them & moving documents from Review into completed. As before I will follow behind approving your edited versions as needed. I'm onto another section now - plowing ahead...
Any time you need my help in return, just ask!
Thanks!

I just took a look at the section and decided to check an "in progress" page. See what you think about the corrections I made here. The one word I am not sure about is "gave" near the bottom.
Henry
I am working on some new Mary Church Terrell and will get back to your section when I am done with that. I will keep you posted.
Thanks, Henry - any time will be just fine. I really appreciate your work on these. I am also working a bit on Olmstead -- as an architect and CM those documents are fascinating to me. But I'm not engaged to the extent or completeness of my work on the TR documents.
I looked at the document you linked - I agree with all your edits - looks good! I sent it through to review.
I find that once I start a project, TR, for example, I get engrossed in it. Working on the MCT papers, even though there are few now, reminds me of how much I learned about her. You may find more interest in Olmstead as you go through them but you have learned so much about TR that his papers are probably second nature to you now. I learned that George Cortelyou lived in my hometown, Huntington, NY. I remembered as a child that there was a Cortelyou St. near the Huntington train station and it occurred to me to see if it was named for him and discovered he lived nearby.
Hi Diane- I just finished reviewing the section. Let me know if you need me to do anything else with it. Great job overall.
Henry
Thanks, Henry! I followed in your heels and accepted almost all the edited pages. There are a few left i re-edited with very minor pickups. If you could take one final look that would be great and I’ll final approve.
I’m working on another section now and will have that for you in a few weeks. Between us on this push we’ve thoroughly vetted and likely completed almost 2000 docs!
I'll check those shortly and let you know if there is anything else to do. 2000 pages? Wow.
Hi Diane. I accepted all but page 782. I really think the signature is H. Holland but would prefer you take another look. I have attached a page that I Googled and it shows one of the owners as Henry Holland. If you disagree I will go with whatever you think. If you think it is Howard, let me know and I will accept it. If you agree with me, please change it and I will accept.

Great research! I changed back to Holland…
Heh, I just realized I sent the reply to myself but I'm assuming you saw it because that page was edited and I accepted it. I just wanted to let you know Diane, that every time I get done working with you I feel spoiled. You are so thorough that I can count on every page being extremely accurate. I say this as I am slogging through a section where I have to check every word on every page (no fault to the transcriber, it's just the difference with different people). If I don't hear from you have a great Holiday!
