Please help with the Roosevelt Papers, there are so many and I wish to finish them
Hi Evan- I have been working in Teddy Roosevelt since March. I started with "in progress" and once that was close to done (before the latest document dump) I went back to reviewing. I am now in
2. Mar. 7-Sept. 15 1901:
Vice Presidency and McKinley's Assassination April 20- May 8
I am going in order and when I finish all documents in this folder I may go back to "in progress" in the new section. TR will take years to complete so don't get discouraged. There are others working here but with the volume of papers we are in for a long haul.
BTW, if you ever want me to review a page or if you have a question about a document feel free to paste it here. I would be glad to look it over.
Take care,
Henry
I have been painstakingly working through the 1908-1910 TR Letters. I have almost completed the entirety of one section -- entering over 500 files "for review" the past few weeks. It certainly would be helpful to buddy up to get these approved (where appropriate) or re-edited. If you have time to do a few a week (slowly as you have time) it would really help. I can do the same for you too of course - just let me know the section!
The section I have mostly completed is:
Theodore Roosevelt Papers: Series 1: Letters and Related Material, 1759-1919; 1908, Dec. 20-1909, Jan. 25
https://crowd.loc.gov/campaigns/rough-rider-bull-moose-theodore-roosevelt/safari/mss382990087/?
I had to re-open a number of completed documents while doing this, as there were many errors in transcription of names, places, etc. It constantly amazes me that people will just make things up when they can't quite read text, but they do...

Hi Diane- I am behind you. I am working in TR but in:
I had started at the beginning and worked my way up to here. I've been in TR for 6-7 months now.
I have also been going folder to folder and am up to Apr 9-May 15. I will be glad to look at your folder when I get a chance. I have a few other things going on in the next few days but I will try to go through it. What I can do is to notify you when I finish the section and you can go back and check for pages you can review which would mean I edited them.
I am working slowly so it may take me a week to get through them. I have not been consciously checking all completed pages but if I am flipping back and forth among pages and happen to spot one with errors I have been having them reopened too. There's just too much to do in TR. I don't mind people guessing considering I read each document anyway but it makes you wonder if other reviewers accept them because they can't do any better. I just wish reviewers would leave the pages they have trouble with.
Anyway, thanks for reaching out and feel free to contact me if you want an update or with other concerns.
Henry
That's great Henry. No rush - I realize this takes you off track for your own work. You can post to me here when done. helpful suggestions welcome too, as I immerse myself on the fascinating world of TR.
I have started to review completed pages -- as there is honestly so much wrong with them. I am progressing slowly and methodically. Have just started another grouping of letters. I'll review your section too when I have a chance.
No need to review my section. Keep moving ahead. I am sure TR will take years to do. I was hoping to review, finish in progress and then maybe take a look at completed pages. I wish we had the capability to reopen completed pages ourselves but it would take a lot of trust on the part of the moderators and LOC to enable some of us to do that.
Hi Diane- Don't panic. I'm not done yet. I am almost up to Page 200 but I work slowly also and read everything. I may finish in a week or more. I decided to put aside what I was doing and will get back to it when I am done.
You are doing a fantastic job. I have mostly corrected some typos, or words that I have reinterpreted as something else. I also have filled in some [?] words but mostly have just dealt with picky stuff.
One thing, most of the notes at the top of letters are Ackd for acknowledged. There are some that are ansd (answered) but not as many. Answered may give some the false impression that there is a reply floating around. As I said picky stuff.
Henry
Ha ha. Of course as soon as I mention the ackd vs. ansd point, the next batch of letters are all Ansd.
Thanks so much, Henry!
And your clarification of "ackd" vs "ansd" is golden. I was uncertain on that and so the entries are a bit wobbly back and forth. I will try to go back and pick up the ones with "ansd," - which I'm afraid are most, as I did think it meant the correspondence had been answered. Reminder to self - use this Forum for such questions!
Diane- I came across this page and do not know if Japanese is written horizontally or vertically. Occasionally, pages are turned sideways and I just wanted to be sure before I accept it. Let me know if you think this is correct.
Henry
Unfortunately, I don't read Kanji, only a little Hiragana, so I am not qualified to say. I left all the Japanese documents "in progress" and untouched, as I didn't feel qualified to address them.
One was in progress and one page was to be reviewed. That's okay. I set up a separate thread for those pages. Hopefully, someone can help. Hebrew, French and Spanish I can do. Chinese, Arabic and Japanese? Forget it.
Hi Diane- I just finished the section. Check over what is left. Some changes you may agree with, some not. Let me know if you want me to re-check. By the way. I checked how many pages needed to be reviewed and it said 48. I know I edited much more than that so either you or someone else has been on my trail, I suppose.
Take care,
Henry
