Hi Diane,

I transcribed the letter and I inserted the notes on top of the pages and some corrections to make clear which places he obviously talks about. I felt to do so because that letter is really full, and I mean really really  full with all kinds of mistakes. This letter was a kind of challenge because it was hard to read in many places and also a kind of disturbing, but interesting too. I made some corrections in the text because I googled the person (Charles Vogelreiter) and thought it would make sense to get at least the places right he meant. He was in several newspapers with his story about finding gold in Alaska and so on. This is what he also writes about in this letter here and requesting help from President Roosevelt.

Thanks for clarifying, Sabine.  I wonder if Lauren Algee or Abigail Shelton can help clarify here, as the transcription standards specifically say a) not to inset reviewer notes, even helpful ones and b) not to change misspellings or errors in the text.

I understand the impulse though.  I recently transcribed some Italian documents and there were a few misspellings that I really puzzled over.  Specifically the writer, who was either fairly illiterate or perhaps using some regional dialect wrote the verb "hanno" (they have) exactly as it is pronounced, without the silent "H", writing it as as "anno". Since "anno" means "year" in Italian it took me a while to realize what was going on.  But I left all as it was - misspellings and all.

It would be helpful to get clarity on this -- and maybe have something added to the foreign language transcription standards on this.

While it's tempting to correct the author's mistakes, we advise you to preserve the original spellings in the transcription. If you think there's a misspelling that will have a negative impact on searchability (like a name or place or other proper noun), correct the spelling by adding a tag to the page. We can certainly reiterate this in our foreign language instructions-thanks for the suggestion!
