How do I search the national archives catalog for an old DC Circuit Case (1980)?

  • Hello Mr. Williams,

Thank you for submitting your question to the History Hub. Since the District of Columbia Circuit Court was abolished in 1863, you may be looking for District Court records. These records are in Record Group 21, Records of District Courts of the United States. The series is Civil Case Files, 1933 - 1988, National Archives Identifier 559845.

Cases in 1980 are arranged by year and then case number. Please contact the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, DC at this email address: archives1reference@nara.gov. There are finding aids that will help staff locate case files by docket number or the names of the parties involved.

Please be aware that modern records often contain personally identifiable information (PII). To minimize risks to privacy we do not have these court records available online. If you are interested in a copy of the case, please say so in your initial reference request. There may be a fee.

Best of luck in your research.
