This blog post is an update of the original blog Archives II Ground Floor Maintenance, starting December 8 that was posted on November 21, 2017.

Work dates are now December 22 - January 18.

The National Archives at College Park (Archives II) will undergo temporary closures in the Researcher Registration Room 1000 and part of the ground floor security entrance to the research complex between December 22, 2017 and January 18, 2018.

Researcher Registration Room 1000

Room 1000 will have a temporary closure during a re-cabling improvement project. Due to the nature of the work, the project may extend beyond mid-January. The temporary location for researcher orientation and researcher cards will be conducted at a desk in the main ground floor lobby.

Security Entrance to Research Complex

The ground floor security entrance to the research complex will have a temporary and only partial closure. Researchers will have full access to the research rooms but please anticipate longer wait times to enter and exit the research complex. The work will be done at the same time as Room 1000.

We will continue to post updates and have status information on the main phone line (301-837-2000) for Archives II. We appreciate your patience.

Please submit questions to Michael Knight, Branch Chief, Research Services, Research Room Operations at 301-837-0475 or Michael.Knight@nara.gov.

PLEASE NOTE: The following blog post describes upcoming changes to the records pull times and consultation hours for Archives 1 (Washington DC) and Archives 2 (College Park, MD) only. All changes will go into effect on MONDAY, OCTOBER 2ND, 2017.

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) at Archives 1 (Washington, DC) and Archives 2 (College Park, MD) are adding an additional pull time!  This will alter the five current pull times.  The new pull times will be 9:30 AM, 10:30 AM, 11:30 AM, 1:00 PM, 2:00 PM, and 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Also, additional records may not be signed out after 5:15 PM.  However, records signed out at 5:15 PM or earlier may continue to be viewed.

In addition to a new pull schedule, there will be a change to the hours of on-site research consultation.  Currently research consultation is available from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.  Based on the recently changed Research Room hours and revised pull schedule, the new consultation room hours will be 8:45 AM - 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday.

The Innovation Hub at Archives 1 and the partners' digitization room (6050) at Archives 2 will continue to close at 5:00 PM.  Electronic Records consultation remains by appointment only between 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM.  Researcher Registration and phone coverage (1-86-NARA-NARA) at A1 and A2 will be open until 5:00 PM.

After 4:00 PM, researchers will have on-site access to the services listed below at Archives 1 and Archives 2:

If you are currently researching or planning a visit to Archives II for the next two weeks, please be aware of the following changes to available food options:

The Archives II cafeteria will temporarily close from Tuesday, May 30th through Friday, June 2nd as NARA transitions to a new vendor. The cafeteria will re-open on Monday, June 5th.

The Archives II sundry shop will be closing permanently after Friday, May 26th.

If you have any questions or concerns, please direct them to Stephanie Chapman at (301) 837-3129 or stephanie.chapman@nara.gov.

With re-cabling work now complete, the Motion Picture Research Room (Room 4000) at Archives II in College Park is now open for normal business hours and operations.

From Wednesday, April 5 through Saturday, April 22, 2017, the Motion Picture Research Room (Room 4000) of the National Archives at College Park will be closed to NARA staff and the public.  This closure is required to facilitate the ongoing building wide re-cabling project to maintain and improve NARA’s network infrastructure.

Digitized motion picture content will continue to be accessible and available on the Special Media Public Access PCs in the Still Picture Research Room (Room 5050) and the Cartographic Research Room (Room 3050).  Digitized content already available online through the National Archives Catalog will also remain accessible and available.

Motion picture reproduction orders (Item Approval Request Lists), and regular reference inquiries sent to the mopix@nara.gov inbox will be unaffected by the temporary closure.

Motion picture reference staff will be available on an on-call basis, and will be able to provide limited consultation service and textual records to onsite researchers.  Textual records in the custody of the Motion Picture Branch (e.g., production files) and which require pull slips will be made available in Room 4050 (Microfilm Research Room), and pulled at the regular pull times. The on-call consultant will arrange for the pulling and refiling of these records for researcher use.

During this period, access to the self-service reference collection and finding aids in Room 4000, as well as regular records pulls from the motion picture holdings, will be suspended.

We expect the Research Room to re-open for normal business hours and operations on Monday, April 24, 2017.

We ask for your patience and understanding while we work to upgrade our infrastructure.  Please direct any questions, comments, or concerns to Daniel Rooney, Chief, Motion Picture, Sound and Video Branch.  He can be reached at: 301-837-1995, or daniel.rooney@nara.gov.
