NARA released the 1950 population census schedules for researcher use on April 1, 2022, at https://1950census.archives.gov. This is the 58th in a series of blog posts on the 1950 census.
You've done a name search - and found your family at the bottom of the census page. You know there are more family members on the next page, but can't figure out how to get to the next page. This explanation will help you.
Let's say I've done a search for "Tuttle" in Ashtabula County, Ohio, and that I'm excited to find the Harold F. Tuttle family in ED 4-81. This is my search result:
Search result for Tuttle, ED 4-81, Ashtabula County, Ohio
I'm so excited! I zoom in to see the Harold F. Tuttle family at the bottom of the page here:
Detail - Harold F. Tuttle family, Sheet 4, ED 4-81, Ashtabula County, Ohio.
Ok, but where's the rest of the family? How do I get to the next page? You're right, this isn't obvious, but stick with me. You need to make note of these important facts:
Got it: Ohio, Ashtabula, 4-81, and sheet 4. Ok, next step: You're going to repeat your search with the state, county, and ED number. Do not search for the name this time. This is what you get:
Search for State, County, and ED Number only: Ohio, Ashtabula, ED 4-81
Next, click on the blue box that says Population Schedules. You will see the first seven images from that Enumeration District. The first image will usually always be the Portfolio Control Label for the ED. We want Sheet 4, so Sheet 4 will be the 5th image (Got it? Portfolio Control Label plus 4 = 5th image). Click on that and you'll see the Harold F. Tuttle family there at the bottom. Now click on the next image (6th image) and there at the top the Tuttle family continues. See image below. I've zoomed in.
Harold F. Tuttle's Family Continues at the Top of the Next Page (Sheet 5, which is Image 6), ED 4-81, Ashtabula County, Ohio.
In the graphic above, Sheet 4 - which is image 5 (circled in red once) - is where Harold Tuttle's family starts; Sheet 5 - which is image 6 (circled in red twice) is where it continues.
