Faith, I'm surprised I can read most of this!  Now what I like to do is to see the context..... but that didn't work, so next I did a google search for James Thatcher 1781 and that suggested the answer.  He was a surgeon.  I believe the word is surgeon!!

Thank you, Joel, I think you're right! This is very helpful. I just transcribed a list of who was eligible to receive pensions, and the word "musician" came up, although spelled mucician, and I realized the fife and drum corp were in battles, too.
