African American Union Civil War Soilder 1863-1865

Seeking information on my maternal gggrand father Warren Brown. I found him about 2012 on a website under United States Civil War Service Record “Union Colored Troops, 1863-1865.  He is also found of the 1870 Federal Census in Terrell, County Georgia. My challenge is when I went to search in the N.A.R.A. I either get  no record found or use Key word search. I tried different wording. I get nothing close.Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your attention in this matter.

Thank you for posting your question to the History Hub!

We checked the Compiled Military Service Records (CMSRs) for the United States Colored Troops (USCT) in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office (Record Group 94), and located one set of miscellanous personal papers relating to a Warren Brown. He was never assigned to a specific USCT regiment, lilkely because he enlisted on May 31, 1865, after the war was already over, and so there does not appear to be a formal or official service file. The papers indicate that he was 19 years old at the time, a farmer by trade, and was born in Nelson County, Kentucky. If you believe this is the correct person, we would recommend your contact the Archives 1 Reference Branch (RR1R) for further assistance in obtaining a copy of the record. You may reach them directly at archives1reference@nara.gov.

We hope this information assists you with your research!
