Ella Wilson born to Corrine Wilson around 1889-1891 in Iberville Parish in Louisiana, her father is unknown. Its said that Corrine delivered around the age of 11-13 yrs. Ella was raised by her maternal grandparents Andrew and Alice (AKA Elice or Elsie) Tavor or Tavon ("Mullata woman"). Corrine is said to have been born in Ascension or Orleans Parish in Louisiana (Archives.com). In or around 1910 Ella married Joseph (Joe) Gales in Alabama or Louisiana (Ancestry.com). We cant confirm either, but there is a marriage license that matches these names issued in the state of Alabama (Ancestry). Joseph is said to be born around 1885 in Alabama and his family is from Haiti. This hasn't been confirmed, just rumored by family. Their union birthed 3 children, Melviner Wilson-Green (1911), Beatrice Wilson (1910 or 1911, Edna Wilson-Kent (1914) and Joseph Gales Jr. (around 1915) all in Iberville and or Tangipahoa Parish. Ella passed away in 1982 in Louisiana and Joseph in 1942 in Louisiana-its said that he was poisoned. We know in Louisiana (and most Southern states) that African American/Blacks names were changed throughout the years during the Census.-we are thinking this is making things more difficult as well. My family was very "tightlipped" about their mother and fathers past for some unknown reason. This is all that is known of my family and we know there is much more to find out, we just don't know where else to search without running into dead ends. Does anyone have any leads or advice on ancestry searches in Louisiana?
